FranU Alumna Sharonda Franklin first felt called to Respiratory Therapy after her son was diagnosed with asthma. What began as a personal connection grew into a distinguished career dedicated to helping others breathe easier.
Her journey started at FranU, where she graduated from the Respiratory Therapy Program in 2013 with her Registered Respiratory Therapist credentials and a bachelor鈥檚 degree in biology.
The turning point came during her clinical training. 鈥淚 saw firsthand how respiratory interventions could quickly improve a patient鈥檚 comfort and outcome,鈥 Franklin said. 鈥淚n that moment, I realized my passion went beyond my son鈥檚 diagnosis; I wanted to dedicate my career to helping others breathe easier and regain their quality of life.鈥
Her career began in critical care, serving both pediatric and adult patients. Within her first year, she was named Rookie of the Year. Soon after, she advanced to Pediatric Transport Therapist, then Charge Respiratory Therapist and later Supervisor.
She credits her rapid success to a combination of a strong work ethic, inherent adaptability and genuine passion for respiratory therapy.
鈥淚鈥檝e always set high standards for myself, which pushed me to learn quickly and take initiative. Most importantly, I stay focused on patient outcomes, making sure every decision is centered on providing safe, effective and compassionate care.鈥
One of her most formative roles was serving on the pediatric transport team.
鈥淏eing in those moments taught me not only how to stay calm and think critically, but also how to advocate effectively for my patients and provide compassionate support to both the child and their family. That experience solidified my commitment to excellence in respiratory care and shaped the way I approach every patient interaction.鈥
Another defining moment came during the COVID-19 pandemic, where Franklin cared for critically ill patients on the frontlines. The experience deepened her resilience, sharpened her critical decision-making and reinforced her commitment to teamwork.
FranU played a key role in giving Franklin the confidence to thrive in high-pressure situations through its academic standards and hands-on clinical training. The University鈥檚 emphasis on critical thinking, teamwork and compassionate care deeply influences how she approaches patient care and leadership today.
鈥淭he foundation I gained there continues to guide me in making sound clinical decisions, collaborating effectively and upholding the highest standards of respiratory care.鈥
Throughout her career, Franklin has given by focusing on education, training and development in respiratory therapists and nursing staff. Recognized for her impact, she received the OLOL Health Geaux Hero Award. Later, Franklin became a leader of her profession as LSRC Chapter 6 President for the Baton Rouge region.
Today, she leads more than 80 respiratory therapists as Respiratory Manager at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.
鈥淏eing the manager of over 80 respiratory therapists means more than overseeing operations, it means guiding a large, diverse team to provide safe, high-quality patient care while supporting their professional growth.鈥 She continued, 鈥淯ltimately, my goal is to empower each team member to excel in their role while ensuring that our patients receive the best possible care.鈥
