As Dean of Students at FranU, Esther Penns draws on her experience as a mentor, youth leader and poverty coach to support and uplift students.
Beyond her role on campus, Penns serves as a youth leader for GenSalve Eden, the youth ministry at her church. She helps lead weekly discussions and activities that encourage young adults to apply biblical principles to everyday life and deepen their faith.
She recently served at GenSalve Eden Weekend, an event focused on helping participants understand their identity in Christ. The theme, “Stay on Stream”, used modern-day references and activities to encourage youth to stay spiritually aligned and engaged with their faith.
Penns’ long-standing commitment to youth mentorship goes beyond her church. Since 2011, she has volunteered as a college mentor for the Baton Rouge Youth Coalition, a nonprofit organization that supports underserved students through high school, college and into their careers.
“This organization perfectly aligns with my personal mission to invest in the lives of the next generation by fostering authentic connections and encouraging them to explore the possibilities of their potential.”
She invites others to join that mission: “I would encourage anyone who has a passion for working with youth and young adults to consider serving their mission, either through mentorship, tutoring, donating or sharing the organization with a student who could use intentional and strategic support.”
Penns further expanded her impact by earning a Poverty Coaching certification alongside FranU’s Director of Health and Wellness Miriam Holmes. The certification focuses on poverty awareness and competency through reflection, discussion and simulation-based training with other professionals.
“I am excited to explore ways to bring awareness to the poverty crisis in the community and to also develop a robust network of resources to support those in need, especially for our students.”
At FranU, the Dean of Students brings a faith-based approach to every interaction.
“God has called me to be a living expression of love to those I encounter. Every day I get the opportunity to express God’s love to my students by being a listener, an encourager, and a cheerleader. I've learned that everyone's motivations, experiences, and personalities are different and to approach each person as a unique individual with a unique God-ordained path.”
