Drawing from his own experience, FranU Alumnus Gannon Brandt delivered an inspiring speech at the Spring Commencement, celebrating the achievements of the Class of 2025.
“The message I wanted to share was that everyone in the room has had many successes and failures, and although those changes are hard to see at the time, we have become much better through our journeys. I wanted people to realize that by graduating from the difficult professional programs, they had accomplished something no one can take away.”
He emphasized the importance of recognizing personal growth and using it as a foundation for the future.
“I wanted them to realize that, because of this growth, there is evidence that they can move forward in any direction they wish. I hope they continue to apply what they learned on their journey to grow and become the people they aspire to be.”
Brandt discovered his passion for patient care while studying nursing at FranU, where he was introduced to the world of frontline healthcare.
“Nursing shaped my love for serving patients and their families, which led me down the path of becoming a physician.”
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2015, Brandt began his career helping patients, supporting their families and deepening his knowledge.
He recently graduated from medical school and is now an internal medicine resident at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. His next goal: a fellowship in critical care medicine.
Brandt recalls his FranU professors inspiring his curiosity in the field.
“They really led by example, and this instilled in me a curiosity. Because of their example, my curiosity grew more as I worked in the neuro ICU as a critical care nurse. I wanted to learn more and to better serve the patients I was seeing.”
When asked what it means to be a FranU graduate, Brandt shared: “For me, being a FranU graduate means being well trained and competent. My experience and those of my friends have shown that we are well prepared for our future.”
He also highlighted FranU’s emphasis on service.
“At an early stage, we are taught to serve others. Being a FranU graduate means that we are part of a special group that is well trained to serve our community and help one another.”
To future FranU graduates, the alumnus offers this wisdom:
“It is an arduous journey, but it is very fulfilling when you find your vocation. There will be times when you feel like a failure; however, the effort spent is always worthwhile, and you can continually improve and learn from those setbacks.” He continued, “FranU is a unique place to embark on this journey, as you will be supported and seen by others. You are not alone.”
“My advice is to work hard and try new things, as I don’t think anyone has ever regretted putting forth effort. Lastly, to keep an open mind and continue growing, who knows where you might end up.”
