Khloe Gregory built an unexpected friendship that’s become an important part of her life.

Gregory, a student in the FranU biology program, met her friend Bette at a Goodwill store one day.

“She asked me what shirt I thought would go best with a new pair of pants she just bought, and we started talking. Then she asked if I would ever want to hang out with her sometime. And I of course said yes!”

When asked what aspect of their friendship might surprise others, Gregory explains, “I would say our age gap. I’m 19 and she is 80.”

Still, the connection between them is genuine. One of Gregory’s favorite moments with Bette is a day spent together chatting.

“My favorite memory with her is taking her to our local coffee shop and getting beignets and talking about our lives, just getting to know more about each other. We found out how much we had in common such as us both being Catholic.”

Over time, their connection has grown into something more special, teaching Gregory a valuable lesson.

“I have learned that we never stop meeting new people to love in life.”

The biology student remembers when their bond solidified.

“She mentioned how she and her husband never had any kids, so I told her that now they have me! She then said that I was a gift sent from God. Those words truly warmed my heart and I'm so glad I get to make a difference in someone's life.”

To anyone hesitant about befriending someone different from themselves, Gregory shares this: “To not care about what others may think and just do what’s in your heart!”
