REACH: Virtue Ethics LC - Virtuous Use of AI in Healthcare? (Fri, Nov. 7)
Who: All faculty and staff
When: Friday, Nov. 7, 12:30-1:30pm in SFH, 3rd floor boardroom. Snacks, water, and coffee are provided. BYO lunch.
Topic: "Virtuous Use of AI in Healthcare?"
We will discuss the Vatican's 2025 document, Antiqua et Nova, especially #71-76 on the use of AI in healthcare. Our goal is to discuss what a virtuous use of AI in healthcare might look like. If there is enough interest, we will consider reading a book together in the spring: Encountering Artificial Intelligence: Ethical and Anthropological Investigations (2024), which draws on Pope Francis鈥檚 discussion of a culture of encounter and broader themes in Catholic social thought in order to examine how current AI applications affect human relationships in various social spheres and offers concrete recommendations for better implementation.
Purpose of the REACH: Virtue Ethics for Educators and Clinicians Learning Community: We will discuss the importance of the virtues, their place in the lives and education of our students (and ourselves), and their cultivation, especially in the context of Catholic healthcare ethics. We will discuss important topics such as the ethical issues surrounding brain death and the use of AI in healthcare, especially in connection with our biannual Bioethics Lecture series. These meetings are open to all faculty and staff.
